The Rose and Kettle is open Saturday December 26th and Sunday December 27th for dinner at 5 PM. Sunday the 26th we have live folk-grass blue-jazz music at 8:30.

And our New Years Eve 5 course dinner is filling up. There's still a few slots available for the late night (after 9 PM) seating, and a few more even for the early birds who want to have a delicious meal and then squirrel home and watch the ball drop. The menu is here.

Many people have trouble selecting wines that pair well with traditional holiday meals, especially turkey, which has a tendency to make delicious red and white wines taste like aluminum foil. Fruity Beaujoliais are a great solution, but consider asking your wine merchant to order some Sparkling Shiraz for you. It seems strange, a deep rich sparkling red wine, but it's fun and tasty and goes good with hams, roasts and even turkeys and other birds.

HI Everyone,

We've got a busy weekend coming up, in part to make up for the next weekend when we will be closed for the Thanksgiving holiday. But first, I'd like to thank everyone who came out last Saturday for Big Night. It was a great success and lots of fun. In three weeks time we'll be showing another film and serving another delicious dinner along with it. We're going to do a noir film next, highlighting one of the great ironies of typcasting in Hollywood history. Richard Widmark was famous for his evil snicker and his vicious mistreatment of wheelchair-bound ladies, but in reality he was known as a generous and decent family man and a really sweet person. One of my favorite Widmark movies is Pickup on South Street, about a cynical pick pocket who gets mixed up in a Cold War espionage case on account of all he did was pick the wrong pocket... like it's getting hard for a guy to make an honest living anymore...

This weekend I'll be preparing a French Onion soup with Grilled French Bread and Taleggio Cheese Croutons. Also on the menu we've got spicy pork spring rolls with orange-garlic glaze, fresh local baby spinach from Tom Takacs farm, Osso Bucco from Nectar Hills, and Grilled Tuna Loin. But our star seller these days is the Rigatoni with Chicken and Almonds and Caramelized Onions in White Wine and Cream. What can I say, people enjoy eating it.

Music Update: Live this Sunday at 8:30: The Sifters, a wooly band of acoustic country rockers from the Cooperstown and Cherry Valley area. This is a reunion of sorts, especially commisioned for The Rose and Kettle.

Finally, have you made plans for New Year's Yet? Well I made them for you. Our New Years Eve Dinner and Seasonal Grand Finale Party is always a highlight. The Menu is posted HERE at our Blog.

This Saturday at 8 we show Big Night in the Green Dining Room. Seating is limited, so call us and reserve your table. Sunday Evening a 8:30 our music series continues with a live acoustic performance from local artist Mary Doherty. Mary grew up in and around Cherry Valley and has been playing finger-picked acoustic folk for years. I'm expecting a good turn-out for this one, so come early and grab a burger or something from our Bar Menu.

I know many of my messages lately have given short shrift to the dinner menu, so let me cap this note off with a brief run-down of some of our dinner dishes this weekend:

-Slow-Cooked #1 Tuna with Anchovies, Capers and Lemon
trendy-trendy-trendy is the sushi tuna seared nearly raw with yada-yada-yada, and don't get me wrong, we love that stuff too. But try this classic Mediterranean dish where the fish is slow-poached in extra virgin olive oil. and what, you may ask, is #1 Tuna? that's one of the choices the purveyors give me when I call to see what kind of fish they've got this week. other options would be #2, #3, etc... #1 is just, that... the best.

-Braised Pork Shoulder Roast Cooked with Chillies, Cilantro, Ginger Ale and Cloves
powerful flavors combined for a delicate balance

-Cold Weather Stew
Takacs Farm root vegetables in a roasted chicken broth

-Red Velvet Cupcakes, Tiramisu, and Apple Tarts a la Mode have all be added to our dessert list in the last few months by Dana's sister Robin, who is our Pastry Chef

       A couple brief updates:

       Now you can enjoy delicious Rose and Kettle meals at home. Check out our new To-Go menu posted online. I designed this menu to be recession-proof, if you know what I mean. You can download a PDF of the menu as well. We are open Friday through Sunday at 5--and the To-Go menu is available at these times as well. Check it out.

       This Sunday the 8th, our music series continues with an Open Mic Music and Poetry Fest hosted by Bob Millner. Bring that diary, that scroll, that life-long work-in-progress and use our microphone to pronounce it to the universe.

Next Saturday the 14th of November we bring you our new special event: MOVIE NIGHT. You know what a movie is, and you know what a night is, but do you know what a "MOVIE NIGHT" is?

Good guess. It's a night where you watch a movie, and watch it with your friends, and eat a delicious 3-course dinner while you do all that, and it happens at The Rose and Kettle. On Saturday, November 14th we will be showing Big Night with a big Italian dinner in the Green Dining Room. We will be serving risotto, but we wont be serving it with a side of pasta. Call now, because reservations are limited. Movie and dinner will cost you 20 dollars. (The first course will be a fresh local green salad with lemon oil and croutons, and dessert will be a choice of either a red velvet cupcake or tiramisu.)

The Internet Movie Data Base describes Big Night as such: "A failing Italian restaurant run by two brothers gambles on one special night to try to save the business."
Actually, I don't really like this movie at all...

at 8:30, the French Canadian string duo Feu D'Artifice performs. Feu D'Artifice (which is French for Fire Works) is composed of violin and guitar. They play from a song bag of traditional Acadian music.

Dear Friends,

In Just a few short weeks the Rose and Kettle will be launching its new TO GO MENU, its new SATURDAY NIGHT MOVIE DINNER THEATER and an array of other great and fun things.

Every Saturday in the green dining room we will show a movie at 7:30 PM. A special menu will be created to go along with the film, and the emphasis will be on good times, good movies and good hearty fare. Expect the menus to be eclectic and inexpensive. We are hoping to do one for kids, too. Up first: Italian Movie Night with Spaghetti and Meat Balls and Salad and Garlic Bread. Details to come.

Also we are excited to announce the drafting of a TO-GO menu featuring menu items and new things as well. Many of you like to get your food to-go already, now we're just codifying that part of the restaurant, expanding it and streamlining it as well, and creating a special menu to take away and keep in your ever-expanding files. Thoughts and suggestions are welcome as we draw up this document.

Remember, we're open this Friday through Sunday, and we have live music on Sunday at 8:30. The musical act will be none other than myself, solo and with some guests as well. My band King Vidor is currently finishing its 2nd record, I'll be doing some of those tunes as well as some I wrote and recorded in Italy last Winter. And some old weird stuff too.

Hey Friends and Family,

Just a brief reminder that The Rose and Kettle Restaurant is open Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights at 5 for dinner.

We will remain open until New Year's Eve, and are planning to go out in style with you then. More on that another time.

Remember, our menu changes weekly and we specialize in rustic and heart-warming cuisine, using local farms from the surrounding region to provide us with many of our finest ingredients. This week we're serving homemade ravioli made by our Pastry Chef, Dana's Sister Robin Supak. These are Red Russian Kale Ravioli and I'm making a deep deep deep braised beef bolognese to dress it. We've got Local Pork Shoulder Braised in Apple Cider with Rutabaga Puree, Wild Grilled Salmon with Garlic Mayo Crust and Fresh Herb Salsa Verde, and the return of Lamb Chops with Parmesan Risotto. The Kale is from Tom Takacs in Palatine Bride, the Pork is from Dave and Sonia at Nectar Hills Farm and the Lamb is From New Zealand, a small verdant county just East of the Hudson River.

Every night at 8 we serve from the bar menu, cheap and cheerful eats to keep you from getting that sad feeling when your stomach feels empty.

And this Sunday at 8:30 our Live Music series continues with two acoustic performances, one from Carl Loewenguth and Ben Resnik of Cheese of the Mystic Ceremony, and the other from Spencer Supak of Medicine Sunday. Two great talents from the youth set!

The Scientific Maps: People Love Their Troubles

the scientific maps played a fabulous show last night at the rose and kettle along with our good friend ross goldstein, who played great tunes from his vinyl LP trail songs, some new numbers, and a smattering of covers by lee hazelwood, the kinks and scott walker.

Live Music Begins, and The Fall Menu arrives

Dear Friends and Family,

The Rose and Kettle introduces new menu items this weekend, like Ultra-delicious Veal Milanese with fresh veal from our pals at Gaia's Breath farm, thinly sliced and breaded and parmed-up and cooked crispy, served with Wild Local Spinach, aka Lamb's Quarters, the most delicate and wonderful wild leafy green that is foraged by our farmer friend Tom Takacs up in Palatine Bridge. We also continue with burgers from Dave and Sonia at Nectar Hills farm, with fresh homemade aioli and shoestring fries.

We're still collecting votes for the hall of famous foods from menus past, but one item that's been popular are the old spring/autumn rolls. In response I'm making a new batch of organic chicken and broccoli autumn rolls with cheese, cooked crispy and served with a small green salad with apples and walnuts.

Lots of Fall greens are pouring in from local farms, so I'm making a roasted chicken both-based greens soup with poached egg and crouton. An old Italian recipe I picked up--not last year, but my first time around-- in 1993 when I was a young painting student in Rome and started my accidental education in delicious eating.

Okay, one more thing: The Sunday Night Music Series (Which is FREE) begins this week with the Fantastic Scientific Maps and the equally fantastic Ross Goldstein. We've had them in before and they are also friends of mine from the music underground. The Scientific Maps are a guitar and trumpet-led band that play pop songs with harmonies and melodies to kill for. They, along with Ross Goldstein, are leaders in the anarchic Troy art scene. How does an anarchic scene get leaders? I don't know, maybe through violent over-throw? or maybe just through excellence. Ross plays guitar pop with influences that range from Don Ho to T-Rex, and that is not a joke. He wrenches a near slack-key Hawaiian tone from his Fender Stratocaster that is jaw-dropping. It all starts this Sunday at 8:30. Check out our blog for the current musical schedule and links to these band's web pages.

Time to start wearing sweaters and eating more comfortable food.

Back for a cameo this weekend is the good old fashioned Hamburger, a medium-sized flattened ball of fresh ground beef from Nectar Hills Farm which is aggressively salted and then peppered, then cooked on a flaming hot grill and finished in the oven. If you've never tried one of these babies, you don't know what you're missing. We put it on a brioche roll next to a pile of salty fries with garlic mayo (or aioli) and ketchup. The "Burger," as people with time constraints like to refer to it, is not often seen at The Rose and Kettle, so if you want to catch one, come in soon.

We've also got some other new old favorites to add to our menu. Rigatoni with Chicken and Shallots and Cream, Wild Salmon with Beet Emulsion, Braised Beef Stew with Cinnamon and Potatoes.

The lights are lit and the ovens are on. The red wine is at room temperature and the bread is warm. The new menus are printed and the floors are still a little bit crooked. The Rose and Kettle is ready!

This Sunday June 28th we present Dick Solberg aka The Sun Mountain Fiddler live at The Rose and Kettle Restaurant. 8 PM.

Dick is famous in Upstate NY and tours the Mid West, The Caribbean Islands and many parts of the nation and world on the back of his reputation as a first-rate party starter and a chilled-out entertainer with reams of music at his finger tips, both original and classics culled from the song books of our world.

Needless to say, we are excited to have The Sun Mountain Fiddler come in and play.

Just a reminder, we are open every night now, except Wednesday and Thursday, starting at 5 PM, and we have great new stuff on the menu, culled from our year in Italy, like The Leaning Tower of Pizza and so on. No, just kidding, but we do have some great new pasta dishes, slow-roasted garlic and herb-crusted pork roast, and a bunch of sandwiches on the late night (after 9 PM) bar menu. We are concentrating on affordable every day food that is healthy and inexpensive, because in this economy we know people still want to treat themselves to dinner every once in a while.

One more thing: beginning July 18th-- which is the start of The Glimmerglass Opera Season, we will be open on Thursdays too!

GRAND RE-OPENING!

This Saturday June 20th at 5 PM The Rose and Kettle re-opens in full with new menu, new drinks, new vigor and the same old desire to feed and nourish you all.
Old favorites like the Hanger Steak, our Classic French-Cut Chicken, and the R and K Salad and Warm Goat Cheese Tart are re-united and joined by new friends like Pasta Cacio Verde and a Porchetta Sandwich with Salsa Verde.

This season we re-emphasize value and affordability along with local and seasonal and delicious things. We will be selling delicious quaff-able carafes of house wine, we'll have our bar menu of flat bread sandwiches and small plate items (starting at 9 PM every night) and we'll be renovating the house pasta choices to reflect our experiences with Roman food last year while we were abroad.

We'll be open every night except Wednesday and Thursday, and when the Glimmerglass Opera Season commences on July 18th we will also open on Thursdays.

The Summer's almost here and we at the Rose and Kettle are adjusting accordingly. As of today we are open Friday through Tuesday for Dinner at 5, and we will be keeping the kitchen open with late snacks too! Starting at 9 we'll be serving Eggplant Parmesan, Fries, Quesadillas and more.

About dinner: As the reservation book fills we are cranking up the ovens with chile-bathed grilled local Duck Breast from Gaia's Breath Farm, delicious Halibut Cheeks with vanilla beurre blanc, Pork Roast (what butchers call "Butt") braised all day in a Coca Cola Bath, classic R & K Hanger Steaks au poivre and much much more.

This Sunday our friend Carl Waldman will be performing a live acoustic show at 8 PM. But not just any Carl Waldman mind you, this is the all new Carl Walman project: Carl Waldman alone with his guitar! It's a first for many years, the man behind more rock combos than Cherry Valley can recall is finally stepping out to work the wood and wire in a room full of nothing but ears... the ears of his audience.

Hi Everyone,

This Sunday is Mother's Day and we are open for a lunch and dinner marathon from 12 Noon until 10 PM. We've got our regular menu plus wonderful lunchy things for Mom and her gang: grilled wild salmon with lemon ailoi, truffle risotto, chilled creamy wild fiddle head fern soup, hot roast beef sandwiches with horseradish, eggplant parmesan.

Also on Sunday night, starting at 8 PM we have more live music. Two musician friends of ours from the underground pop scene in Troy, NY will be joining us for an evening of acoustic goodness. Ross Goldstein of The Coconut Show plays a sort of slack-keyed tropical road anthem pop with fuzzy toned guitar and organ. Come out and get a copy of his album Free Dumb, on vinyl!

Aaron Smith fronts The Scientific Maps, who are big time now in Albany and Troy. They perform in a similar vein as Ross, a bright trumpet and moog-laced rockin' pop music. Aaron will be accompanied by his trumpet player Donna Baird so we're in for a treat. From The Beatles to Lou Reed to Vampire Weekend, these two bands run the gamut of likenesses while holding on to their own unique and excellent sound. It's free and it might just be the best music event we've hosted yet.

As for the rest, well we have local chickens in this weekend, which we will be serving in our special classic manner: plain (but great!). Also, local beef that I am braising in orange and herbs for a risotto, lots of fresh local greens, local duck sausages and cotto cured salami, local chevre goat cheese. we also have wild fiddle head ferns and wild leeks (aka ramps) fresh from the forest earth. Plus all your favorites like hanger Steak and Goat Cheese tarts. We are open at 5 on Friday and Saturday, and as I said earlier, we open at 12 Noon on Sunday.

Thanks for your kind wishes last week. I'm going to keep this message short and sweet. We've got lots of delicious things coming up this weekend. Local farms are brining in the goods and some nice wild seafood is iced and ready for you as well. Here's a sampling:

Fresh Ham from Nectar Hills Farm has brined overnight in a Bourbon Brown Sugar Bath. We're roasting it up golden crispy-like and serving it with mashed potatoes and Fava Beans.

Hey Everyone,

The Rose and Kettle Returns today with our Spring menu and the start of a new Season.

We also have some exciting news: Dana and Agnes and I are moving to Rome for 10 months in September. Dana was awarded the Prix de Rome by The American Academy of Arts and Letters. That's a residency in our favorite city, so we are very very excited. For now, the plan is to shutter the restaurant for the slow season and then re-open upon our return in the Spring of '09. But we'll keep you posted.

As for the here and now, we have fresh oven-roasted halibut, local duck sausages with fava bean pesto, risotto with braised local lamb shoulder roast, and pan-seared free range chickens in our classic and simple manner. Also, Sunset Hill farm greens are back, warm goat cheese tarts, vanilla cardamom panna cottas.

This is Clem with the weekend's food update from The Rose and Kettle.

First let me remind you that this Sunday at 8 we debut our new series, POSERS' PARADE, an open invitational thematic music night. Like an open mic, but with rules. This week's theme, DAVID BOWIE. So come on over, bring an axe, a sax or an axe-man and a couple tunes to cover. We organized this event with our friend Mark Reinertson, and picked Bowie to launch what we hope will be a recurring event because there's a Bowie for everyone. There's a bard, a balladeer, a disco pop master and a glam electronic prince. Whatever your gender or current hair style, you probably resemble David Bowie from one of his phases.

Secondly, if you have a suggestion for the next edition of POSERS' PARADE, please let us know. Some suggestions already:

COWBOY SONGS, SLOW JAMS, THE BEATLES, ONE HIT WONDERS. keep them coming!

Anyway, the weekend's menu holds many great comforting favorites and some new surprises. We have Nectar Hills Farm Chorizo and Sundried Tomato Risotto with Painted Goat Grating Cheese (that's our very own upstate parmesan made from goat's milk cheese!!!).

Also, we have Gaia's Breath Farm Duck Ragu with Penne, a deeply flavored red sauce with herbs and wine and delicious slow-cooked duck meat.

We are still cooking up our favorite winter fish--Almond-Crusted Wild Barramundi Filet with Potato Wedges and Balsamic Aioli. (This is my spin on classic fish and chips: Crunchy coated white fish with salty potatoes and a vinegary dip.)

We have a delicious Eggplant Ravioli served with Marinara, Marinated Eggplant and Mushrooms, and chopped mozzarella.

Alright! Looks like the winter storm warning is in effect! So put on your Sondre Norheims and telemark across the ridge. The hearth is lit and the wine is red (and white).

Dear Friends,

Usually I promise brief missives, but today I promise a little more. This letter concerns first, the food we cook, then, the sources of our food. We'd like to remind you that many of our menu items come from the inspired efforts of some amazing local farmers and food artisans who make most mortals lives seem breezy and easy.

The Rose and Kettle opens this weekend (tomorrow at 5 in fact) with a whole host of great foods, many from our friends at local farms in the region and a few fished from far-flung and chilly waters. On the chilly waters front, we are continuing to serve wild Barramundi, a flakey thin filet from New Zealand that we coat in ground almonds and flour and cook tempura-style and serve with balsamic aioli and potato wedges. More to the local, we have Painted Goat Farm warm goat cheese tarts with a mission fig glaze. We are also making garlicky meat dumplings with ground pork, lamb and beef from Nectar Hills Farm and Vancalcar Acres. I am also cooking a jambalaya style stew of organic rice, tomatoes and local Gaia's Breath Farm chicken sausages with wild Gulf of Mexico shrimp. We will have a lamb risotto with leeks, parmesan and pinenuts, and braised lamb from Vancalcar Acres Farm. Finally, this weekend we are serving thinly-sliced eggplant marinated in mint and red wine vinegar and served with eggplant ravioli, marinara sauce and mozzarella cheese.

I'd like to take a minute to tell you a little about our farm partners who work very hard to bring us the delicious foods that we have the pleasure of feeding you. While corporate farming structures have steadily marched our culture further and further away from it's own inherited and diverse food principles, and left us and our kids almost blind and lacking in real pallet and plate diversity, a few courageous people have chosen to turn around and look over their shoulder, grab the brakes and try to steer this vessel back back back, closer to the world we'd like to live in. Farming is very hard work, and to choose to return to the land and work with plants and animals in a pre-industrial fashion is an incredible undertaking that requires commitment to something that is largely unsupported by the norms of America today. Some people would almost say it's crazy. But enough folks have been doing it and I meet new ones every year who are striking out with all sorts of schemes, varying goals and approaches, and interesting life stories to tell.

We know that while we didn't invent the notion of 'LOCAL' as either a healthier whole approach to eating and living, or as means of nurturing the regional economy, but we are excited to report that our experiment in it has been so successful and that our roster of friends who we buy from has grown every year and deepened, as young and energetic farmers are cropping up every year. Here are 3 short farm bios for you:

Recently we met the people at Painted Goat farm, Ilyssa Berg and Javier Flores. Their aged goat cheese buttons and creamy chevre are phenomenally light and tangy and worldly tasting, especially for a farm hardly a year old. Then I learned that they were busy excavating caves deep under ground and pouring concrete down there and crafting a dumb waiter system for accessing their products and I thought "Damn, that's for reals." (yes, "For Reals." That's what I thought.)

Last Spring we began buying meat and vegetables from Gaia's Breath Farm. While Painted Goat does the "one thing, and with incredible focus" approach, Gaia's Breath approaches their property like a little panoramic micro-world, and make a go very successfully at being everything for everybody. That's why our menu can feature beets and heirloom tomatoes, boudin blanc sausage, roast duck or even suckling pig, and all from one farm. These folks are tireless workers and Chrissy, who has a background in culinary art, makes sausages so delicious that I buy them whenever they are available.

Finally, it's been a few years since Dave and Sonia (Dutton and Sola) moved from New York City and brought their eclectic skills to Cherry Valley. They've opened The Nectar Hills farm Store on Main Street, they've performed at local music events (MORE ON THIS IN MINUTE) and they've fed this town with copious bushels of delicious potatoes, wild edible flowers, and lots and lots of some of the best pork and lamb and beef we've ever tasted. Their Highlander Beef is a popular and recurring component to many Rose and Kettle risottos, they introduced me to my first skin-on spare ribs and shoulder roasts, and they play some wickid (that's right, WICKID-spell check it in your Street Dictionary) psychadelic acoustic music. Dear Folks,

If you want to read about the chocolate brownie, skip to the last line of this email. If you're here to read about the music being postponed, just proceed as you would normally when reading an email.

We're postponing this weekend's acoustic music night for 2 weeks for a host of small reasons. Our DJ is sick and half the village is off to NYC for an art field trip, and finally, it's Academy Awards night and we'd rather have the whole night to ourselves.

Suffice it to say you've got no more excuses--we're giving you an extra FORTNIGHT to dye that mullet and work up an a cappella rendition of Panic in Detroit like you've always dreamed of.

This weekend is not a slouch on the food end, however. We've got local Gaia's Breath Farm chicken sausages that are roasted with sage and radicchio and served with brown rice and broccolini. We've also got nectar Hills Farm Pork Chops grilled and served with a balsamic reduction, fava beans and potato puree. We have the Barramundi fish, that's a flakey wild New Zealand Fish that is crusted with almonds and served extra crispy with lemon-garlic aioli. And we have the return of an old house favorite, Vancalcar Acres lamb shank braised and served with lemon herb risotto. YUM.

ANDDDDD... tonight we introduce the chocolate chocolate chip brownie with vanilla ice cream, caramel sauce and crunchy chocolate pearls. I knew you'd skip to the end!

This is Clem at The Rose and Kettle. we're cooking up some exciting stuff this weekend, but before we get to that I have a brief interlude for you.

Here's the story of the week:

I went to buy 3 tablets of drawing paper on Tuesday for my daughter Agnes. I went to the Cooperstown General Store, my favorite store. The woman at the counter--whom I'd never seen before-- looked at the paper tablets while collecting my money and asked me: "Getting ready for later?"

I said "Yup."

And since that moment I've been wondering what did she mean? Probably just a passing small-talkism, but not one I've ever heard before--it felt rather existential. If I was buying party hats or a hand gun maybe I could understand, but drawing paper? "GETTING READY FOR LATER?" If anyone has an explanation for this that they can suggest, feel free to email back.

We will be serving our regular menu plus some classic lover's cuisine, like filet mignon with tuffles and hollandaise sauce, and roasted oysters rockefeller. Dining will be ala carte this year, so it will be all about freedom and choices! and love!!!

Alright. If your still reading this email you are most likely very hungry or starting to fall asleep, so I'll speed along and tell you about this weekend's menu.

We have our classic warm goat cheese tarts with caramelized onions; we have the recently popular new spinach salad with roasted beets, Stilton cheese and pumpkin seeds with a pomegranate dressing; and we have crispy winter rolls stuffed with potatoes, parsley and cheese and served with slow-cooked apples; on the entree side we have crispy duck breast with Madeira beurre rouge; our classic French-cut chicken breast and thigh with garlic mashed and sauteed spinach; We also have a great Baramundi fish from New Zealand, a thin filet, white and flaky, rolled in crushed almonds and served with a lemon sauce--this is a spun version of the traditional Sole Almondine!!! check it out.

And finally, this Sunday we are happy to have local guitar slinging cowboy Jim Faliveno with his baritone voice and his deep supply of classic country, pop and rock and roll tunes. * PM to 10 Sunday Night.

Hello Everybody,

Cherry Valley is in the midst of an ice storm as I write this note, but we continue to persevere with the hope that the weather will break and you will be able to join us this weekend because we have great food and music and a special event on Saturday at The Ommegang Brewery in Cooperstown. Actually, the weather report has it that the storm ends at 5 tonight, which is exactly the moment we open our doors and welcome you in for dinner.

This Sunday we have an un-superbowl party begining at 8 PM with live music from Mike Hand and Don Osterberg, two core members of the Hand Band. Original and popular rock and roll standards from two of Cherry Valley's favorite musicians, a touch of improv and a touch of danger (actually, no danger--just fun). Saturday at noon, come on out to the Ommegang Brewery and sample all their delicious classic and radical Belgian Ale concoctions paired up with some wild Rose and Kettle food stuffs. The boys from the Brewery dropped off a couple of cases of their Chocolate Ale and the Ommegedon for me this week with the simple instructions to cook whatever I like as long as I make enough food for a hundred and fifty folks and that everything I cook is saturated with Ommegang beer. So I've got some delicious Pork Shoulder Roasts, Lamb steaks and duck sausages, all from local farms, and all ready for the next step on the food chain (which is hopefully the last step on the food chain).

Coming up on February 14 is Valentines Day, and the Rose and Kettle will open especially for this night with our regular dinner menu and some delightful specials. Look for fancy steaks and rare truffles, exotic fish and rich seafood. More to come!!!

Delicious Vittles and Ominous Seapods: the live music series continues

Hey Everybody,

This is Clem writing to say come on down to the Rose and Kettle and eat some food sometime! The ovens are hot and the stoves are sizzling with delicious sweetness and spicy heat. We've got our great chickens, local pork chops, king salmon from New Zealand and hanger steaks. We've got eggplant ravioli and proscuitto ravioli. And we've got our always evolving international wine list created by your sommelier Dana Spiotta.

This Sunday at The Rose and Kettle we welcome the esteemed guitarist and song writer Dana Monteith, formerly of the very popular jam band The Ominous Seapods and currently bassman in my own King Vidor rock combo. Last year Dana released his own album called Truck Stop Love Ballads. Dana is also the owner of his own recording and mastering company, Kitchen Table Recording Corporation of America, and he's a well-known musician on the Albany scene. He's toured the States many times with the Seapods and he's a great person to know.

Hi Everyone, this weekend's email is going to be brief. The Rose and Kettle is happy to welcome the classic country and rock sounds of Addy Schneider and Kelly Rourke this Sunday night at 8. Bring a date or come alone. The music is free, beers are cheap and crying in your beer is encouraged.

Over the weekend, the menu will feature roasted wild blue nosed grouper in a rich plum bath, slow-cooked pork belly from Gaia's Breath Farm, braised Highlander Beef from Nectar Hills farm served in a fresh broth and tossed with fettucine. Dear Friends,

We are home from our trip to Philadelphia and we are excited and charged up to provide you with all the delicious things you might need to get you through another day.

Our bellies are full of famous Philadelphia food stuffs, and our hearts are happy because while we were away we learned that the Albany Metroland selected us the Area's #1 restaurant. We are honored and humbled by this selection and we will continue in 2008 to make delicious food from our area farms and serve it to hungry folks Friday through Sunday nights.

We're just cranking up the ovens to prep for the weekend and I can tell you we have local slow-cooked pork belly, olive oil-poached wild salmon with lemon risotto, boudin blanc sausage ragu with penne, and a wild mushroom and sundried tomato risotto.

And our music series will continue through the Winter months. We are bringing in friends and bands from out of state like The Baird Sisters from Philadelphia and The Grown Up Noise from Boston, and our new series, The Poser's Parade, curated by Mark Reinertson, where we invite friends to perform songs by a pre-selected artist. This February look out for the Posers Parade Debut: "Bowie (in Space)." Come on down and do your favorite Bowie song, be it the Laughing Gnome, Cat People or Under Pressure.

This Sunday the music is still up in the air, so if you want to come in for music give us a call first to see what's up.

Hey Folks,

Coming in your electric mail box very shortly will be The Rose and
Kettle New Year's Eve 5-course Dinner Menu. Open it up, read it and

It's always our busiest, best night with loads of fresh rich foods
both exotic and local, hordes of jolly folks and just a little bit of
libation.

But this note is a quick update regarding this weekend's offerings.
I'm not downplaying the here and now, however, because this weekend at
The Rose and Kettle you can feel the New Year's jets rumbling to life,
the party bells ring out and the warm hearth glows with holiday
deliciousness. For example:

Boudin Blanc Louisiana Pork and Rice Sausages in a puff pastry wedge,
topped with Madeira-soaked onion confit and dotted with raisins.

Brown Sugar-seared NY State Flank Steak with mint salad and almond dressing.

Also returning to the menu: two long-clamoured for old favorites.
Classic French Cut Crispy Chicken, and Local Otsego County Chevre
(this new item from The Painted Goat Farm in Morris, NY).

FINALLY: MUSIC. The Sunday Acoustic Series continues this weekend with
a visit from our old friend Bad Veronica, once of Sharon Springs, NY
and now of Philadelphia, PA. Don't let the name fool you. The "Bad" in
Bad Veronica is an ironic modifier which means she's really good and
great and a lot of fun to see and hear. Cherry Valley knows Bad
Veronica and you will too if you join us on Sunday at 8.

Dear Friends,

Here's a quick one to fill you in on the doings at The Rose and Kettle
this weekend.

First of all, our Sunday Music Series is on hold for one week as we
are serving a special Holiday Lunch this weekend from 12 to 3. We'll
be fixing soups, classic cobb salad, prime rib sandwiches and avocados
paninis, and selling holiday gift certificates for 10% discount. All
of Cherry Valley is opening its doors and inviting the community to
its annual Holiday fest, with Santa and all.

Music starts up again on Sunday the 9th with Bad Veronica from

MEXICAN TURKEYS SING OPEN MIC

Hi everyone,.

The weekend is here and The Rose and Kettle opens as scheduled to feed
your stomach and nourish your heart and soul. This Sunday at 8 we have
Acoustic Open Mic with hostess Dorothy Reiberg and our Sunday Night
Cantina serving Cheap, Fresh and Delicious Mexican Food. Shrimp Tacos,
Black Beans with loads of Garlic and Cumin, Guacamole etc. etc. Come
out, sign up and sing or recite or just stare at the audience with all
your god-given intensity.

But this is really a dinner restaurant. "Fine Dining." We served
dinner starting at 5 Friday, Saturday and Sunday. To satisfy your more
rarefied sensibilities, come in and have some homemade, rich, rustic
and healthy dinners prepared from the finest locally raised and grown
ingredients. Balsamic-BBQ Glazed Pork Chops from Nectar Hills Farm
served with Potato Gratin--Roasted Garlic and Duck Sausages with
Organic Rye Berries, Dried Apricots and Local Beets--Gorgonzola and
Fig Tarts--Local Tomato Salad with Sea Salt, Fresh Herbs and Balsamic
Vinegar.

And remember last week's email regarding Thanksgiving? Well decision
time is almost upon you because next Thursday the 25th of October is
the cut-off for us to order our All-Natural Turkey Breasts. That means
if we don't have your order by then we can't shoulder all your holiday
burden and prepare for you and your family and friends the greatest
Thanksgiving meal of your collective lives. So think it over and once
you've decided that you'd like an all-natural Turkey with ALL the

Hi everyone

This week at the Rose and Kettle the theme continues to be the Fall,
the Autumn and the Indian Summer. We are cooking up local ducks with
patented black fruit beurre blanc--if you can understand French then
you know how difficult that must be. Nectar Hills farm pork chops are
in transit as I write this, and we'll be searing them off and serving
them with a fresh horseradish emulsion. Emulsions are a fresh, healthy
sauce that technically are in the salad dressing family but in fact
work best against meats and fish.

We are also big into blue cheese, and smoked Rogue Blue from Oregon to
be precise. This cheese is cave-aged for 90 days and smoked with
hazelnuts. We are pairing it up with caramelized figs and shallots in
a warm tart. Also popular to start lately is the 'Autumn Roll,' a
variation on the spring roll but this one stuffed with potato and herb
and cheese and served with sweet and sour cabbage.

if all this is tempting to you, then come in quick because we are
closed for Columbus Day weekend--that's NEXT weekend, in order to
attend my brother's wedding in California. But for a final dose of
Rose and Kettleness, the Sunday Night Acoustic series continues this
week with my own band, King Vidor, or some pieces of it at least.
That'll give you enough of me that you'll be glad to have a break next
week. We play acoustic rock and indie pop with country rock and
vintage tube tone. But we'll turn it down for the Rose and Kettle and
try to mellow your mind.

Ring in the Fall

Hello Rose & Kettle friends,

Just a quick message to ring in the Fall and give you details on the return of our Sunday Evening Acoustic Music Series.

First, on the menu we have some new autumnal stuff:

warm Gorgonzola tart with caramelized figs and shallots
potato-herb-cheddar autumn rolls with braised cabbage
pistachio-crusted halibut with truffled mashed potatoes
nectar hills farm osso bucco with lemon risotto
sauteed chorizo and shrimp with creamy polenta
gaia's breath farm duck with orange beurre blanc

That's just a taste of what's brewing up here.

Second, our Sunday Acoustic Music was so successful that we are happy to continue it on into the Fall and hopefully through the Winter. This Sunday the 16th We bring back Richard Frasca, who closed the Spring Series and promises to open the Fall series with a complete set of songs and NO REPEATS from the last gig (well, maybe ONE repeat, "The Song You Know By Heart.") If we know this one by heart, why is Richard repeating this one? Don't ask the artist, just enjoy the fruits of his labor, at 8 O'clock, with a full compliment of bar food and cocktails to sustain you.

On Sunday the 23rd we welcome the Cherry Pickers, Art Dudley and Phil Zinner's bluegrass string duo whose harmonies killed the crowds at last season's open mic. Speaking of open mic's, look for that on September 30th, but more on that later.
